As America grew, the need for automobiles expanded and car frames were some of the earliest auto parts shipped by rail. Many auto makers had specialized component factories spread out over a region, and the parts that were produced were shipped by rail to central assembly plants. The car frame loads were stacked on flat cars and chained in place, or stacked vertically in racks in a gondola as our model depicts.
