Railroads require constant upkeep, repair, and maintenance, so older railcars that are still roadworthy are often converted to Maintenance of Way duties, including maintenance of the right-of-way, tool and equipment supply and storage, and materials for railcar repair and wreck recovery. Founded in 1859, Santa Fe was one of the largest railroads in North America up until 1996, when it merged with Burlington Northern to form BNSF.
